Operation Burq: KE Teams Pull Down 2300 Illegal Connections in Recent Raids

Karachi, April 7, 2016: K-Electric’s anti-theft campaign ‘Operation Burq’ against power thieves and heavy defaulters continues to achieve positive results. KE teams carried out 70 raids in different areas of the city including Orangi, Lyari, Bahadurabad, Saddar, Garden, Liaquatabad and Gulshan-e-Iqbal. In these raids more than 2,300 illegal connections were pulled down weighing over 473 KG.

In a few raids, the team disconnected 1969 connections on power dues worth Rs. 200.20 million in the areas of Gulshan e Iqbal, Liaquatabad, Federal B area, North Nazimabad, North Karachi, Nazimabad, and Surjani. Furthermore 917 connections were severed due to outstanding dues of Rs. 50.48 million in the areas of Defence, Clifton, Saddar, Garden, Bahadurabad and Tipu Sultan Area.

Similarly the team also cut off 1271 connections in Orangi, Lyari,Baldia, Uthal and Site for nonpayment of dues. The residents of these areas collectively owed Rs.80.28 million to the power company.

The Burq team also raided several multi-storey residential projects in the areas of Nasir Colony, Korangi Town Ship and Labour Square. More than 40 culprits were caught red-handed involved in electricity theft and were charged penalty on the spot.

Spokesperson KE said that the power utility conducts such raids every day and since electricity theft has been made part of the Penal Code of Pakistan, we hope such people stop using illegal means of electricity as it not only affects KE’s operations but those consumers as well who have no part in such illegalities.

It is pertinent to mention that Electricity theft has become part of the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC) and theft of electricity has been widely defined in this act. Electricity theft is now a punishable offence with up to 7 years jail time along with a hefty penalty.
